On 27 July Carfizzi, a municipality of 745 inhabitants in the province of Crotone, celebrates its patroness Santa Veneranda.
When the king's men came to count the hearths for taxation, the Albanians of Carfizzi would take apart some of their straw houses; once the count was over, they put them up again. That is why the figures in the registers are low: twenty-three hearths in 1508, about eighty people in the early sixteenth century.
Between 1662 and 1666 the Greek rite here gave way to the Latin one, and the rite was lost; the language was not. Arbëresh is still spoken, at feasts the women wear the costumes with the gold ornaments passed from mother to daughter, and exchanges with Albania take place every year. The comune, though, came late: in 1811 it was a hamlet of San Nicola dell'Alto, and independence arrived only in 1904.
