Calanna

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 979 · Postal code: 89050

The name is Greek and means good shelter, and the shelter is in the rock: the shelly sandstone of the hill is hollowed by the wind into tafoni, yellow as dunes when the sun strikes them, and in their walls the fossils of the shells can still be seen. Below lies the Strait of Messina, with the two coasts almost touching.

Between the nineteenth and the twentieth century the people of Calanna turned some of those hollows into stables, and during the two wars they hid in them: on the flank of the castle hill the openings are still there, connected to one another. Calanna was one of the casali of Reggio and, in the Middle Ages, one of the places from which the city was watched and defended.
