Sant'Alessio in Aspromonte

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 323 · Postal code: 89050

With less than four square kilometres it is the smallest comune by area in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria; and it is also one of the oldest in the Aspromonte, born between the thirteenth and the fourteenth century. The old mill is of the fourteenth century too, and in the old centre there are still houses left broken by the earthquake of 1908.

Garibaldi passed through here — the source says only that, and nothing more — and the village has never forgotten it: the road that crosses it bears his name, his monument stands in the square, and the church of the Annunziata is on that same street. The football ground, where the five-a-side team plays, has a stand for a hundred people: almost a third of the village.
