Feast of the Immaculate Conception
📅 Every year, on 8 December
On 8 December Fiumara solemnly celebrates its patroness, the Immaculate Conception, with a procession.
The village was made by people fleeing the coast from Saracen raids, and for a long time it was called Fiumara of the Moors, or of the Walls, because it was the only fortified place in the area apart from Reggio. In 1391 the Moors took four hundred and forty prisoners here, and were destroyed by Genoese ships passing through the Strait. Every year the township paid two hundred and ninety-one ducats to keep two guards and a horse at Torre Cavallo.
In 1586 a lady of the place gave land to the Franciscans, and their convent became one of the largest in Calabria: it had a pharmacy and an iron mechanical loom for weaving raw wool. After Lepanto people began going back down to the sea, and the villages on the coast were born. Here, in 1944, the singer Mino Reitano was born.
