Feast of Saint Roch
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Scilla celebrates Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint invoked against the plague, who has here the church from which the statue comes out for the procession.
Homer put the monster here, the fishermen put the stilts: Scilla is the myth of the Strait turned village, the crag of Ruffo castle sheer between two beaches, and Chianalea — the quarter where houses step into the water and boats park beneath the windows — earning its title of little Venice of the South.
For centuries swordfish have been hunted here with the passerella, the boat with the dizzying mast for spotting the schools: in summer the spectacle is watched from the pier, and the fish ends up in the stilt-house restaurants. Across the water, the Aeolians at sunset seem an oar's reach away.
