Feast of Saint Leonard
📅 Every year, on the Sunday following 6 November
On the Sunday after 6 November Portigliola celebrates its patron Saint Leonard; the territory lies near the archaeological site of Locri Epizephiri.
The name comes from the Latin porta with a Greek diminutive: in the Middle Ages the lords of Gerace set gates and towers here, and they are still on the village standard. Another explanation makes it «the flowerbed of the harbour», because the harbour of the Greek city was close by: the territory of Portigliola falls inside the excavation area of Locri Epizephyrii, over the lower town they call Centocamere.
In contrada Dromo stands the Greek-Roman theatre, and not far off the shrine of Zeus. Of what has been brought out of the ground here, not everything has stayed: some art historians hold that fine Locrian pieces ended up abroad, in Germany and at the Getty Museum. In the square there is a fountain everybody calls the «ace of cups».
