Ciminà

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 595 · Postal code: 89040

The name Ciminà comes from the Greek kyminà, the place where cumin grows: a plant that here served to preserve food and from which a liqueur was also made, the «Kumeel». The village, though, is not as old as its name would suggest. Its foundation is put at 1453, when Greek and Albanian refugees of the Christian faith, driven out of Constantinople by the Turks, halted up here below the mountain of the Tre Pizzi.

The choice of site says everything about those people: rough ground and far from the sea, sheltered from anyone who might come by water, but with land good for wheat, pasture for the animals and woods for timber. It did not take long for the feudal lords to notice: the Marullo of Messina bought the land and the investiture and in 1480 obtained from the king the title of counts of Condojanni; then came the Carafa of Roccella, who held Ciminà until feudal tenure ended. On its coat of arms the village has put exactly those three things: the mountain of the Tre Pizzi, a sheaf of wheat and a cow.
