Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Santa Cristina d'Aspromonte celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari; the town's only parish is dedicated to Saints Nicholas and Fantinus.
In 1255 Fulcone Ruffo took refuge up here, fleeing the army of Manfredi, which by then held all of Calabria except two castles: this one and the castle of Motta Bovalina. Fulcone strengthened the walls, and Manfredi got in only in 1258, when Ruffo surrendered. The village first appears in the life of Saint Elias the Younger, who lived here around the year nine hundred.
The earthquake of the fifth of February 1783 razed the village, the castle and the seven churches and killed about eight hundred people, more than half the inhabitants: the survivors moved a little further on, to a place called Scoffetta, and everything began again from there. Of the outlying hamlets, one was lost on its own: Cuzzapodine emptied out until it disappeared.
