Delianuova

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 3,436 · Postal code: 89012

Delianuova has 3,436 inhabitants on the slopes of the Aspromonte, between six hundred and eight hundred metres, in the middle of the olive groves. The comune was born on 27 January 1878, when Umberto I decreed the union of two neighbouring villages, Paracorio and Pedavoli. The names say where they came from: Paracorio is the Greek Perachorio, "the village beyond the mountains", and tradition has it descend from Delia, a Greek town on the Ionian coast destroyed by the Saracens. Hence the "nuova" in the name: this is Delia remade higher up.

Delianuova is above all the village of the green stone, which was quarried in the Cotripa district until 1933. The Basilian monks were already working it, but the leap came with the stonecutters of the Sicilian school who arrived in the eighteenth century, and since then the village has filled up with carved portals, corbels and fountains. There is a walking route that lines them up, seventeen portals and two staircases; the fountain with the mask bears the date 1768 and is the only one of Pedavoli's four left standing after the earthquake of 1783. The books have always called that stone serpentine: the most recent analyses say it is a green schist instead.
