Feast of Saint Sebastian the Martyr
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Cosoleto celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian the Martyr; the town's most important feast, however, is that of Saint Roch, on 16 August in the hamlet of Acquaro.
On the hills that look over the plain of Gioia Tauro, the olive trees of Cosoleto — Sinopolese and Ottobratica — often pass twenty metres: they are woods rather than rows. Until the end of the sixteenth century Greek was spoken here and the liturgy was Byzantine; from 1467 the fief passed from the Clever to the Spinelli, the Ruffo, the Francoperta and finally the Tranfo.
The earthquake of 1783 levelled the village, the castle and the monastery. The inhabitants, with the Tranfo, did not rebuild where it had stood: they put it up again on a more sheltered hill, and in 1806 it became a municipality. The hamlet of Sitizano has a history of its own, detached from Santa Cristina, with the Taccone styling themselves marquises; on 16 August the feast of Saint Roch at Acquaro draws pilgrims from the whole plain.
