The name is written down in a document of 982: the emperor Otto II, giving property to the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, mentions the cell of Santa Maria «in partibus Beneventi», called Sanus Locus, the healthy place. The monastery had been founded by Teodorada, wife of the Lombard duke of Benevento, and the village's first feudal lord was its abbess.

On the eve of the Immaculate Conception, the seventh of December, bonfires are lit at the sound of the bells to warm those who keep the night vigil: laurel branches are burnt among the logs, and the custom is older than Christianity. What the fief was worth two deeds record: sold in 1725 for a little over twenty-six thousand ducats, resold shortly after for sixty thousand to a Beneventan patrician who was made marquis and died a bachelor.
