San Mango sul Calore

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 1,192 · Postal code: 83050

On the twenty-third of November 1980 the earthquake killed sixty-five people here, injured a hundred and seventy-three and left seven hundred and thirteen without a house. To rebuild the village it took money raised in Canada by emigrants from here and by their associations: out of it came thirty-six houses that everybody still calls the Villaggio Canadese, the Canadian village.

Over the Calore there is a bridge of brick, mortar and cobbles taken from the river, going back to about a hundred years before Christ: they call it the Roman bridge, the Devil's bridge or Hannibal's bridge, and it carried the old road that went down to meet the Appian Way. On the arms is San Teodoro, in the pose copied from the ancient seals of the universitas.
