Mirabella Eclano

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 7,904 · Postal code: 83036

On the arms of Mirabella Eclano a phoenix rises from the flames of three ruins. The three ruins are the three towns this place has already been: Aeclanum, the Samnite and then Roman city on the Via Appia, destroyed by Sulla and razed by the Byzantines in 663; Quintodecimo, the village that remained, so called because it stood at the fifteenth mile from Benevento; and Aquaputrida, the name that came next.

Mirabella dates from the fourteenth century, but it too has been remade: the earthquake of 1732 brought it down and it was rebuilt where it stands now. The bishop of Aeclanum, Julian, was the most tenacious opponent of Saint Augustine. Through the town runs the fifteenth meridian east, the line on which Central European time is set.
