Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September the municipality of San Michele di Serino, which takes its name from the saint, celebrates its patron; the territory also preserves an ancient Samnite aqueduct.
The name comes from Serino, of which San Michele was a casale, and Serino is a name made of water: historians derive it from the Oscan «sarino», meaning clear, said of the very pure springs that stood in contrast to the muddy course of the Sabato. From those springs Agrippa started the Augustan aqueduct, built between 33 and 12 BC: ninety-six kilometres as far as the Piscina Mirabilis at Misenum, to supply the fleet and eight cities. An inscription found at Serino, of 324, still lists its destinations.
Of its own, San Michele carries an anvil and a hammer on its coat of arms, because here, when it was a casale of Serino, an ironworks was at work. Of the old village, on the other hand, very little is left: the earthquake of the twenty-third of November 1980 wiped out almost all of it, and among the few surviving traces of the past stands the façade of Palazzo Mariconda. What you see today is nearly all rebuilt after that night.
