Santa Lucia di Serino

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 1,446 · Postal code: 83020

On the arms of this mountain village there is a mermaid. She is in majesty, with two tails turned upwards, black hair and an ancient golden crown; in one hand she holds an oval mirror, in the other a green sprig, and she rests on a blue sea waved with silver. Around the shield runs an inscription in Roman letters — Universitas Sanctae Luciae Serini ex antiqua Luggesa — and the date 1736. The sea, though, cannot be seen from here: Santa Lucia di Serino lies in the upper part of the Sabato valley, on the northern slopes of Monte Terminio, among chestnut and hazel woods, and its real wealth is water, with a network of surface and underground springs that has fed important aqueducts.

The plague of 1656 left the deepest mark. From that epidemic comes the cult of Saint Roch, and for him a shrine was built outside the built-up area, as a defence at once medical and spiritual, alongside the devotion to the Madonna of Constantinople, invoked as well against contagion. On 7 November 1842 a most violent storm — a Latin inscription calls it immanis aquarum vortex — brought down on the mountain a flow of mud and debris that destroyed that chapel; the rebuilding was completed in 1856 through the devotion and the unpaid work of the people of the district, and the decorations of the front, of 1903, were paid for with the remittances of emigrants in the Americas. In the village was born Francesco Moscati, a magistrate, father of Saint Giuseppe Moscati: the holy doctor chose Santa Lucia as the place of his summer stays and treated the peasants of the area there for nothing.
