Serino

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 7,129 · Postal code: 83028

From Serino came the water for half of Roman Campania: the aqueduct that bears its name, the Aqua Augusta, took its springs here and carried them to Naples, to Baiae and to Misenum. The village name is said to come from the Oscan sarino, clear, precisely for those limpid waters, so unlike the muddy Sabato that runs below.

In 1879, in the hamlet of Ribottoli, Sabato Rodia was born. He emigrated at fifteen, worked as a bricklayer in California, and between 1921 and 1954 built single-handed, in the Watts district of Los Angeles, three steel towers up to thirty metres tall, covered in bottles and broken pottery. Simon Rodia is the only Italian on the cover of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's.
