San Nicola Baronia

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 784 · Postal code: 83050

The village was called Sancto Nicola a Ripa and for a time it was independent, then it became a hamlet of Castel Baronia when the fief passed to Federico of Aragon, second son of Ferdinand I. On 17 November 1487 Federico granted it in sub-fief to his own secretary, Oto Mancini, and from that day the title of baron of the hamlet of San Nicola a Ripa stayed in the same family for more than four centuries: the last to bear it was Pasquale Stanislao Mancini, nephew and namesake of the great jurist, who was its eleventh baron.

The barony as a territory, on the other hand, changed hands several times: in 1515 to Consalvo de Cordova, then to the duke of Aponte, to the Cavaniglia, to the Caracciolo di San Vito. San Nicola lies in the upper Ufita valley, in the middle of the Baronia, on the north-eastern side of Irpinia where the Apennines meet the Daunian mountains; its church is that of the Santissima Annunziata. The earthquake of 1930 badly damaged the village.
