On 12 August Trevico, a municipality of 1,072 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, celebrates its patron Saint Euplus (sant'Euplio).
It is the highest village in Campania: the town hall stands at one thousand and forty-eight metres, the only one in the region above a thousand, and from up there parts of six regions can be seen. Horace passed this way in the year thirty-seven before Christ, going to Brindisi with Maecenas and Virgil, and writes that he stopped at a villa of Trivicum.
The cathedral is entered through the bell tower: when in the eleventh century Trevico became a bishop's see, the church was made over and the main door was cut inside the tower. Ettore Scola was born here, in 1931, and the family house has belonged to the comune since 2003; the village's name is also in the title of one of his films, Trevico-Torino.
