Castel Baronia

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 1,150 · Postal code: 83040

Bone combs were made here, and sold all over the kingdom of Naples and the Papal State. Among those merchants, from the early nineteenth century, went a jargon of their own, the ciaschino: Irpinian dialect with words deliberately twisted, so as not to be understood. The jargon has died out, but a few of its words have stayed in the speech of the village.

The castle is of 1130, and in 1527 Traiano Carafa sold it to the Mancini, who turned it into a palace: there the jurist Pasquale Stanislao Mancini was born. «Baronia» has been in the name since the village passed under the barony of Vico, today's Trevico. The mother church, founded in 1137, was brought down by the earthquake of 1930; the one of 1694 had already ruined half the village.
