Torrioni

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 578 · Postal code: 83010

Torrioni was born around a tower, and bears its name. In the ninth century Aio II, prince of Benevento, had a great fortified tower built not far from Tufo: it was called Turris Aionis, the tower of Aio, and over the years a small settlement grew around it, taking its name from there. The tower was later rebuilt in the Aragonese period, and its remains can still be seen at the site everyone calls the ruins of Turris Ayonis; every year the Palio della Torre is run around them.

The village stands in a commanding position over the middle Sabato valley, its territory dropping into deep ravines and running from the 300 metres of the lowest district to the 700 of the highest. The coat of arms speaks of towers too: the one with the castle and towers is documented as early as 1742, and then bore the inscription UNIVERSITAS CASALE TERRE IUNE, the name by which the community presented itself.
