Tufo

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 924 · Postal code: 83010

Sulphur is two things at once here: in 1866 Francesco Di Marzo found that there were sulphur mines under Tufo, and for a century the village lived on them, until the pits closed in 1972; but it is still the sulphur in the soil that gives its taste to Greco di Tufo, the white wine that carries the village's name around the world.

The village is named after the rock it stands on, the tuff, and the castle the Normans fortified looked out from the Terminio to the Sannio: in 1266 Swabians and Angevins fought beneath its walls. The same Di Marzo family of the mines has its palace and cellars in the village; digging for the bridge towards the wood of Prata, a Samnite and Roman aqueduct tunnel came to light.
