Apollosa

The municipal arms show the god Apollo with his lyre, but the god has nothing to do with it: the historian Alfonso Meomartini traced the name backwards — Apollosa, Apellosa, Lapelusa, Pelusia, Pellosa, Lapillosa — to «la pelosa», the hairy one, meaning the slope covered in scrub. A sixth-century inscription by Turpilio calls the place urbs, a city; and near the bridge on the Appia two milestones were found concerning the rebuilding of that same bridge, one datable to around 198, under Septimius Severus.

The old village stood on top of a hill overlooking the Appia, at a spot still called Terravecchia. In 1460 Ferdinand I had it destroyed because its lords, the Della Leonessa, had taken the side of John of Anjou; it was later rebuilt where it stands today, and of the old one only the ruins of the castle remain. On the Appia, at the boundary with Ceppaloni, stood the Taverna del Passo, named after the feudal customs post there, with a mill still working before the First World War.
