Foglianise

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 3,509 · Postal code: 82030

Foglianise has 3,509 inhabitants in the Vitulanese valley, on the slopes of Monte Caruso, and the name comes from an epigraph: a Latin inscription dedicated to the goddess Fortuna Folianensis, which points back to the estate of a patrician, Folius Oriens, a landowner in these parts. The Roman village did well as long as a branch of the via Latina joining Benevento to Telesia passed through its territory; in the fourth century an earthquake razed it, as it did many other places in Samnium.

On the coat of arms there are seven leaves, one for each of the historic casali out of which the village grew: Barassano, Palazzo, Leschito, Cautani, Foglianise, Utile and Giovanni Viglione. At the time of unification monsignor Francesco Pedicini lived here in exile, a native of Foglianise, who governed the archdiocese of Bari from here at a distance and ordained the new priests in the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. In August the grain festival is held, the thing Foglianise is known for beyond the valley; in 2012 president Napolitano granted it the title of city.
