Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
📅 Every year, on 13 June (17 August is also among its feast days)
On 13 June Fragneto l'Abate, a municipality of 1,116 inhabitants in the province of Benevento, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
The name records two owners. Farnitum was the oak wood; then the Lombard princes of Benevento gave these lands to their treasurer Totone, and the place became Farnitum Totonis. In February 1099 the great count of Ariano bought the castle and gave it to the abbot of Santa Sofia in Benevento: from then on it has been Fragneto l'Abate, the abbot's.
In the chapel of the Seven Sorrows, consecrated in 1705 by cardinal Orsini, the altarpiece is signed by Paolo De Matteis, and at the sides of its frame are two coats of arms: the cardinal's and that of the de Martini, the family who had it built. In their palace an eighteenth-century olive press is kept that still works, with all its original parts.
