Campolattaro

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 1,084 · Postal code: 82020

In the nineteenth century the village landed on the desks of scholars all over Europe because of a sheet of bronze: the alimentary table of the Ligures Baebiani, of Trajan's time, which a local lawyer, Giosuè de Agostini, found in 1832 on a farm of his at Macchia di Circello. It is now in the Baths of Diocletian, in Rome.

In 1138 Roger II sacked and burned the place because it had sided with Rainulf of Alife. In 1284 the abbot of San Modesto leased the two churches of the village for a yearly rent of an ounce of wax and six tomoli of wheat. And between 1940 and 1943 Campolattaro was one of the Campanian comuni where the fascist authorities interned Jewish refugees: they were freed when the Allies arrived.
