Moiano

The town's birth certificate is disputed. A parchment in the codex of the abbey of Cava, dated 974, reads «loco ubi dicitur Meane trans Boneia», the place called Meane beyond Boneia: from that single line both Moiano and neighbouring Bonea claim descent, and the two have been arguing over the origin ever since. The name is thought to come from a fundus Mevianus. For centuries Moiano was a hamlet of Airola — officially attested as such in 1640 — and became a comune of its own only in 1809. It stands on the south-western foot of Mount Taburno, on the river Isclero, in a countryside of cereals, fruit, vines, pasture and woodland.

The territory is crossed by the Caroline aqueduct, the work that carries water to the royal palace of Caserta and is inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list. The church of San Sebastiano holds a cycle of frescoes by Tommaso Giaquinto: a concert of angels, stories of Moses, the announcement to the shepherds, the expulsion of the merchants. In the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo, which has a font of considerable artistic value, the Madonna della Libera is venerated, and the centenary of her crowning was celebrated on the eighth of September 2014. The municipal coat of arms, granted in 1953, shows instead the wild chestnut woods of the hills: that wood was once used to make the staves of barrels.
