Saint Stephen Minicillo, patron of the polygonal walls
📅 Every year, on 29 October, in the land of the polygonal walls
Caiazzo celebrates Saint Stephen Minicillo on 29 October.
Caiatia struck its own coins: between the third century before Christ and the Second Punic War it issued coins with the head of Minerva in a Corinthian helmet and, on the reverse, a cockerel and an eight-pointed star. On the castle hill you can still see stretches of Samnite polygonal walls of the fourth century before Christ. In 1229 Frederick the Second and his chancellor Pier della Vigna founded here one of the three Courts of Accounts of the Kingdom.
In October 1943, in the Monte Carmignano district, the retreating Germans killed twenty-two people: eight women and nine children between three and twelve years old. For that massacre two soldiers, a second lieutenant and a sergeant, were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1994. Three months later, on the twenty-seventh of January 1944, American aircraft bombed the town by mistake, killing twenty more civilians.
