Castel di Sasso

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 1,193 · Postal code: 81040

The comune is a scattered one, and its seat has changed four times: it was at Sasso to begin with, the medieval borough of which the ruins of the walls and of the church of San Biagio outside them remain; then it passed to the hamlet of Prea, from 1867 to Strangolagalli and from 1988 to San Marco, the newest of the settlements.

Outside the village, in the half-ruined chapel of the old cemetery, there are frescoes in Byzantine style, probably derived from those of the basilica of Sant'Angelo in Formis close by. The other borough, Vallata, is late-medieval and has parts in Catalan style. On the third of February, for Saint Blaise, they bake the saint's biscuits and anoint throats.
