Piana di Monte Verna

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 2,382 · Postal code: 81013

The village was called simply Piana, then Piana di Caiazzo from 1862, and only in 1976 did it take the name of the mountain at whose foot it stands. The two changes tell the story of a separation: a hamlet of Caiazzo for centuries, Piana broke away in 1808, was reunited with its mother town within three years, and regained definitive autonomy in 1816. The old name said whose the village was; the new one says where it is.

On the origin of the settlement the historian Bernardino Di Dario reasoned from absence: in the tenth century the hamlet did not exist, because in the bull with which archbishop Gerberto of Capua listed for the bishop of Caiazzo the churches of the surrounding villages, Piana does not appear. The first mentions come from the parchments of the chapter archive, one of 1205 and one of 1326, and the various villages that today make up the municipality came together at different times after the year one thousand. South of the built-up area, ringed by the cemetery, stands the church of Santa Maria a Marciano, known from 979 and rebuilt in Gothic style in the early fourteenth century, with Gothic, late Gothic and Renaissance frescoes. At a place still called the Faggianeria the Bourbons bred pheasants to restock the royal hunting grounds.
