Our Lady of Constantinople, patron of the Roman Villa of Punta San Limato
📅 Every year, on the Tuesday after Pentecost
Cellole celebrates Our Lady of Constantinople on the Tuesday after Pentecost.
In April 1970 the people of Cellole, tired of waiting for Sessa Aurunca to discuss their separation, began blocking the main road. Then they blocked the Rome-Naples railway too, and a mobile battalion of carabinieri was sent in. The referendum was held on 21 February 1973 and it passed: the municipality of Cellole has existed since 2 April 1975.
Since then it has been an enclave: it borders only Sessa Aurunca, which surrounds it on every side, and the beach of Baia Domizia was split between them down the middle. The towers in the square were there precisely to talk to Sessa: from up there the signal fires on the coast could not be seen, and Cellole served as a bridge for the eyes.
