In the marshes of Minturnae, Gaius Marius hid while fleeing Sulla, and the assassin sent to kill him — Plutarch tells — was defeated by his voice alone: "Do you dare to kill Gaius Marius?". The archaeological area of the ancient city keeps its Roman theatre, which hosts summer performances again, and stretches of aqueduct along the Appian Way, which crossed the Garigliano river here.
