Built directly over the ancient settlement of Suessa Aurunca, this Campania town of just over 22,200 residents rests entirely on a solid mass of volcanic tuff. This distinct geology is the result of its location on the southwestern slopes of Roccamonfina, an extinct volcano.
Positioned near the Garigliano river, the municipality sits 40 kilometers from Caserta and roughly 30 kilometers east of Formia. On the hilltop, the excavated Roman theatre still testifies to the rank of the ancient Auruncan city.

📅 Every year, on 8 May
Sessa Aurunca celebrates Pope Saint Leo IX on 8 May; the municipality's many hamlets, however, hold their own distinct devotions, such as the Madonna della Libera at Cascano, celebrated on the first Sunday of May.
