Liberi

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 1,157 · Postal code: 81040

The village was called Villa Schiavi, and before that Villa Sclavia: the name came from the Schiavoni, people who arrived from Dalmatia and were set to work here as colonists of the Benedictine abbey of San Salvatore Telesino. In 1862 the comune changed its name and called itself Liberi, the free.

In 1097 sant'Anselmo d'Aosta slept here, and in 1737 sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori, who wrote The Glories of Mary in the village. In October 1943 the place was taken and taken again: before withdrawing towards Dragoni the Germans badly wounded a peasant who had hidden two wounded Americans and blew up a house, where two children from Naples died.
