Mignano Monte Lungo

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 3,258 · Postal code: 81049

Mignano Monte Lungo has 3,258 inhabitants in the corner of the province of Caserta wedged between Lazio and Molise. The name comes from a Latin Minius; the "Monte Lungo" was added much later, in 1947, to remember the two battles fought here in 1943. Before all that there had been Cesennia, an Etruscan town, and the Romans had built defensive walls here that served as an aqueduct as well. In 1139 the Normans of Roger II defeated the army of pope Innocent II here: the pope was captured, taken to the castle of Mignano and there signed the terms of peace.

In the autumn of 1943, as they withdrew, the Germans blew up the fortress, the town hall and the bridge over the Rava, the only crossing between the Casilina road and the village. Then came the First Motorised Grouping of the Royal Army, men from all over Italy, placed under American command: on 8 December they attacked Monte Lungo covered by thick fog, but a gust of wind swept it away and they were cut to pieces. They came back on the 16th, with a different plan, and took the mountain. The village holds the gold medal for military valour, and at the foot of Monte Lungo stand the war memorial and the museum of the battle.
