Conca della Campania

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 1,256 · Postal code: 81044

The coat of arms of Conca has four towers, and their gates are not all alike: the closed ones recall the Castrum Conchae, which the Lombards of Capua tried and failed to take in 1049; the open ones recall the Castrum Pilanum, which count Pandonolfo of Capua did conquer, in 881. The village lies on the flank of an extinct volcano, Roccamonfina.

Between the first and the fourth of November 1943 the Germans of the Hermann Göring division, stationed at Roccamonfina, carried out a manhunt here: thirty-nine civilians killed between Conca and its hamlets, women, children and old people. It was the third-largest Nazi massacre in Campania by number of victims. Before retreating the Germans had already brought down the Galdieri Bartoli palace, four hundred rooms full of paintings and frescoes.
