On the flank of the Roccamonfina volcano, in the tuff, there are at least forty-six human footprints: three trails going down the slope, left on a flow still warm by people who lived about three hundred and fifty thousand years ago. Here they have always been called the Ciampate del Diavolo, the Devil's footprints, because no one else could walk on lava.
They were studied in 2003, after some hikers reported them, and they are among the oldest sites of their kind in Europe. The volcano that printed them went out tens of thousands of years ago; lower down, along the via Casilina, lie the ruins of Rufrae, the town that according to Cato the Samnites founded. The municipality is a scattered one, and the town hall is at Tora.
