Rocchetta e Croce

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 463 · Postal code: 81042

The two villages that make up the municipality, Rocchetta and Croce, were born of a flight: when in 879 the Saracens destroyed ancient Cales, down on the plain, the survivors climbed up to the heights and fortified themselves here. The names give the two origins, one military and one religious: the rock and the cross. In the arms, beside the tower, stand the two letters, R and C.

The rock the name comes from has had two opposite lives. Built around the eighth century, it was for years occupied by the Saracens themselves, who used it as a base for raiding; later it passed to the bishops, who made it a place of retreat and prayer. Here lay the barony of the bishops of Calvi, and the bishop of Teano-Calvi still bears that title today, as an honour.
