Pignataro Maggiore

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 6,230 · Postal code: 81052

When the last inhabitants of Cales abandoned the city, towards the end of the eighth century, they scattered into the surrounding country: out of that dispersal four villages were born, Calvi Risorta, Sparanise, Francolise and Pignataro. The name may come from the pignattari, the makers of cooking pots, and pottery had been the trade of the people of Cales; though some derive it from a pine wood or from the surname of a Capuan family.

On the fifteenth of December 1862 the word Maggiore was added to the name, from the mountain behind the village, so as not to confuse it with the other Pignataro, the one near Cassino; which shortly afterwards gave in as well and became Pignataro Interamna. In 1647, during the revolt of Masaniello, the troops of Diomede Carafa sacked Calvi and Pignataro: the bishop's house was nearly pulled down and the archive burned, and the bishop moved his see here.
