Roccaromana

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 878 · Postal code: 81051

The village appears for the first time in 1101, in a diploma of the prince of Capua; in the same years, in a charter of Montecassino, the count of Teano swears to defend the abbey against all enemies save one, who is named: Guaimondo de Roccaromana. Above the village, on Monte Castello, the Normans raised a cylindrical tower eighteen metres high, on an earlier Lombard one.

From the top the Volturno could be seen for forty kilometres, and that is what it was for. The tower was bombed in the Second World War, rebuilt in 1948, then brought down by a storm and left alone until the restoration of 2016. The apses of three churches in the municipality are painted by the same man, Vincenzo Galloppi, between the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth: in one, Saint Cataldus saves fishermen from a storm.
