Feast of San Gregorio Magno
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of August
On the first Sunday of August San Gregorio Matese, a municipality of 1,022 inhabitants in the province of Caserta, celebrates its patron San Gregorio Magno.
The people here lived by sheep and by esca, the plant tinder with which fire was started. They were so few and so poor that in the assembly of Piedimonte, whose hamlet the village was, they did not even have a councillor of their own: the men of Castello del Matese represented them. They asked for autonomy in 1742 and got it six years later.
On its new coat of arms the village kept one of the cypresses of Piedimonte, as though carrying away a piece of the town it had come out of. The land register of 1754 counts a hundred and twenty-seven heads of family, five priests and eighteen widows and spinsters. In the centre runs the Vico Stretto, which at its narrowest measures forty-five centimetres.
