Of the Alifan Calendar, the carved calendar of the Roman town, only the fragments of two weeks in August survive. Those few lines mention a city circus that nobody has ever found: of the amphitheatre and the theatre there are traces, of the circus none. The Roman walls, by contrast, still stand almost entire, and inside them lies the grid of cardo and decumanus.

Alife has been a bishop's see documented since 499, when bishop Clarus held it. The Matese fault has brought its cathedral down twice, in 1456 and in 1688. And then there is the onion: it has been grown here since Roman times, and for centuries selling it was how the town made its living.

Pope Sixtus I, patron of the Good Friday procession

📅 Every year, on 11 August; Good Friday brings the Addolorata and Cristo Morto procession

Alife celebrates Pope Sixtus I on 11 August. On the evening of Good Friday, a sculptural group of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Dead Christ is carried solemnly in procession. Deeply felt too is the devotion to the Maronna Grazia, celebrated on the third Sunday of September.
