Saint Anthony of Padua, spring patron of Roccamonfina
📅 Every year, on the last Tuesday of May
Roccamonfina celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua on the last Tuesday of May.
Roccamonfina has 3,626 inhabitants inside the crater of an extinct volcano, at six hundred metres, on the slopes of Monte Santa Croce, which is its terminal cone. The name comes from just there: in the documents of the year one thousand that mountain was called Monte Fino, and in the seventeenth century the letters L.A.M.F., Locus Arcis Montis Fini, appeared on the coat of arms. The legend of princess Fina fleeing persecution, on the other hand, has no foundation.
The crater is all chestnut groves, and the chestnut of Roccamonfina now carries a protected geographical indication; at Pratolongo the neviere remain, where snow used to be stored. The weekly market has been held since 1352, and in 1430 Saint Bernardino of Siena and Saint James of the Marches founded here the sanctuary of Maria Santissima dei Lattani, after a statue of the Virgin had been found. Not far off, near the hamlet of San Domenico, the village of Cerquarola is a ghost town, abandoned after earthquakes.
