In 1678 the government put some of the hamlets around Naples up for sale, and Casavatore was among them: the inhabitants scraped together two thousand ducats and bought their own ransom rather than end up under a feudal lord. Twenty-one years later they commissioned from Giacomo Colombo the wooden statue of their patron, Saint John the Baptist.
The name comes from that very church: Casa ad Salvatorem, because the Baptist baptises and so saves. Under Murat the town was annexed to Casoria and stayed there until 30 July 1946, when it got its own council back. Today 18,663 people live on very little ground: it is the most densely inhabited comune in Italy.
