The future arrived in Afragola in 2017 on high-speed tracks: the «gateway to the South» station designed by Zaha Hadid — a white wave 450 metres long above the rails — is among the most photographed contemporary buildings in the south of Italy, and it put the town on the travellers' map. Around it, one of the youngest and densest areas in the country.
The past, though, beats the future: in 2005 excavation brought to light an early Bronze Age village buried by an eruption of Vesuvius almost four thousand years ago — a prehistoric Pompeii, nearly two thousand years older than the famous one. Before the Romans, the Samnites were here. The centre keeps the sanctuary of Sant'Antonio, a place of pilgrimage from all over Campania, and the streets of the old farming village. Naples is a quarter of an hour away, Vesuvius on the horizon.

On 19 September Afragola celebrates Saint Januarius, one of the city's patrons; the main feast, however, remains that of Saint Anthony of Padua, on 13 June, which has made Afragola known as the "Padua of the South".
