Approaching Ottaviano, the massive crater of Mount Vesuvius dominates the horizon, a fitting introduction to a municipality that encompasses most of the volcano's peak. Visitors are met by the historic Medici Castle, which now operates as the headquarters for the Vesuvius National Park. The town, home to 23,543 residents, had to rebuild significantly following severe destruction during the 1944 eruption.
Located 20 kilometers east of Naples, this settlement originated as a Roman hamlet on the praedium Octaviorum, a vast estate owned by Emperor Augustus's family, the gens Octavia. Known officially as Ottaiano until 1933, it stands today as a central administrative point for the wider Vesuvian territory.
