Saint Mary Magdalene, patron of Castelnuovo Cilento
📅 Every year, on 22 July
Castelnuovo Cilento celebrates Saint Mary Magdalene on 22 July, in the Cilento National Park.
In the Middle Ages the village was called simply Castelnuovo. It belonged to the fief of Agnello di Senerchia, from whom it was taken away for felony, and it then passed by sale to Antonio Carafa and from him to the Damiani and the Talamo Atenolfi. The second half of the name arrived much later: it was with the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia that Castelnuovo became Castelnuovo Cilento, as we know it now.
The coat of arms, granted in 2001, is all tower: three green mounts joined at the base and above them a red tower of two storeys, five merlons to each storey and one window apiece, a description precise enough to serve as a drawing; and the tower still stands in the middle of the village. Down on the plain, by contrast, the hamlets carry other people's names: Velina used to be Casalvelino Scalo, and Vallo Scalo the comune shares with Casal Velino.
