Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Stella Cilento celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Until 1871 this village was called Porcili, the pigsties. The name, clearly, was not to everyone's taste: the council changed it, taking the new one from the mountain beside it, Monte Stella, and adding Cilento to say where it stands. The settlement had been born around the thirteenth century, when some inhabitants of nearby Torricelle moved up here.
The hamlets, though, are older than the village itself. The church of San Pietro at Guarrazzano is already recorded as a ruin in 1009, probably because of the Saracen raids that were hitting this coast in those years; and San Giovanni appears for the first time in 1047, but as a sors, a share of land: that there was a settlement there is written only from 1392 onwards. The municipality then followed the fortunes of the district of Pollica into the twentieth century.
