At Castinatelli, today a hamlet, stands the abbey of Santa Cecilia: it was built in 1022 by a Lombard named Guaimario, and Benedictines lived in it for four centuries. It was not only a church: it was the weekly market, the school and the pharmacy of the whole district. When monastic lands were confiscated in the fifteenth century, the abbey was abandoned.

The village lies on the slopes of the Gelbison, and even the mountain's name is disputed: for a long time it was read as Arabic, gebel-el-son, mountain of the idol, while today a German origin is preferred, Gelbeisen, yellow iron, for the limonite in its rock. Nine comuni share its flanks; at the top, above seventeen hundred metres, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte Sacro stands where an older cult stood.
