Cuccaro Vetere

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 580 · Postal code: 84050

The name Cuccaro Vetere comes from the Greek cocheros, meaning hilltop, and describes exactly where the village stands: on the summit, commanding the valleys that fall away towards Palinuro. That position made it for centuries a military place rather than a farming one: first a stronghold defending Velia, then a Norman bastion, where a castle and walls were built after Frederick II made the village one of his fiefs.

But Cuccaro was also a place of monks. Here stood the Byzantine monastery of San Nicola di Mira, a mark of that Greek presence which left names and cults throughout the Cilento; and from 1333 the Franciscans settled here, and of their monastery imposing ruins still remain. Of the castle the towers can be seen, and among the churches of the village is the eighteenth-century San Pietro Apostolo, which keeps a relic of the Cross.
