Casalbuono

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 1,211 · Postal code: 84030

The village was born in the thirteenth century as a fief of the abbey of Santa Maria di Cadossa: its lord was an abbot, and his subjects were a hundred families. In 1514 a bull of Leo X passed it to the charterhouse of Padula, so it stayed monastic property.

Until 1862 it was called Casalnuovo, the new hamlet: a royal decree made it Casalbuono, the good hamlet. It stands at over six hundred metres, shut in between the Gioncolo and the monte Difesa, and the Calore Lucano runs through it.
